In the fall of 1955, Life Magazine sent photographer George Silk out to the Mohave Desert to photograph the National Motorcycle Race. His pictures offer a glimpse into what desert motorcycle racing was like in the 1950's. By this time, Harley-Davidson's had been replaced by lighter motorcycles from marques such as Triumph and Matchless. Indian had gone bankrupt in 1953 and it's new owners were importing Royal Enfield's from England to resell in the US.
